Kern, an ophthalmologist and electrical engineer 16 years ago to assist government agencies in finding experts for various technical projects. At that time sequestered in a Southern California hotel, a group of optical, computer, ophthalmologic and bioengineering experts led by Dr. Kern of the Kern Eye Institute, A Medical Group, considered the feasibility of a dramatic new ophthalmic concept. Would it be possible, to develop an implanted lens without moving parts, capable of variable focus to all but eliminate the need for bifocal glasses?

They worked on the problem for several days. The result, a patent for a variable focus molecular lens. powered by the blink of an eye, controlled by an implanted microprocessor.
