Medical-legal psychiatric experience

Since the early 1980’s, I have devoted 10-20% of my practice to forensic psychiatry as a psychiatric expert in civil matters providing Independent Medical Examinations, consultation and testimony. I have been deposed approximately 30 times and testified in Court 3 times. This activity has been on behalf of both plaintiff and defense, divided approximately 40:60, and has covered a wide range of traumatic and non-traumatic psychological injuries including the following: automobile accident induced facial scaring; death of a parent in house fire secondary to product safety failure; the psychological effects upon a parent of the death of a child who was murdered in a municipal park; the psychological trauma from surviving a commercial airplane crash; burn injuries from a motorcycle accident; traumatic spinal cord injury and resulting quadriplegia in a student who was injured during a junior high school physical education class; wrongful dismissal from employment; effects of stress upon physical health and/or pre-existing illness, e.g., the exacerbating effects of prolonged stress from a real estate dispute upon a congenital, life-threatening cardiac condition; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following rape, following a parking lot assault or following exposure to a transformer explosion; or alleged PTSD following automobile accidents, industrial accidents and disputes, or an in alleged assault where physical damages were minimal, substantial pre-existing psychological illness and/or substance abuse was evident or where pre-existing physical disability and/or psychological illness was alleged to have been exacerbated by psychological trauma. Doctor Levy, a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is a graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a graduate of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. He has been a full-time psychiatrist and psychoanalyst practicing in Marin County, California for more than 20 years. In addition, he also devotes a portion of his practice to forensic psychiatry providing medical-legal expert consultation and testimony.

Doctor Levy is Assistant Clinical Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco, and he is also on the faculty at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute.
